Forgotten

Gregor Samsa is a busy salesman. He is the only person who makes money in his family. With his hard earnings, he feeds his sister and parents and also repays their debt. At the beginning his family appreciated him, but now they took it for the granted. Gregor was annoyed by their attitude, but he was too tired from working to get irritated.

Gregor woke up one morning as always to go to work. Every morning his mom woke him up, but today his mom didn’t so he seemed to be late. He was curious why his mom didn’t wake him up but he went out of his house in a hurry not seeing his family. When he got to work his boss gave him a lot of work as he expected. Piles of papers were on his desk and his boss was staring at him. After finishing all the works, Gregor headed home dragging his fatigued body. “Today is so tired. Where is everyone?” he said. When he went to dining room to have dinner with his family, he fell down with surprise. “What are they?” he said. He saw three huge creepy centipedes sitting in the table eating dinner. “Gregor! Gregor! It’s me. Your sister Grete, and they are our parents.” said one of them. “What? Grete? Is that really you? What happened?” he shouted. “We don’t know… When we woke up in the morning, we were changed into these disgusting centipedes.” she said. Gregor couldn’t believe their change and ran into his room.

In the beginning, he was shocked and could not go near them, but later he got used to it. Also, after they changed into centipedes their living expenses like food expenses decreased. Gregor thought, “We can also move into small house. We don’t need this big house anymore since my family changed into smaller insects.” So he sold their house and moved into small house. After a month, he paid all their debt. He was glad that after his family changed, he could pay all their debt, and the weight of responsibility to care for his family was gone.

One day, Gregor came back to his house after work. “Mom! Dad! Grete! I’m home.” But no one answered. When he got into living room three centipedes were crawling on the floor not seeing him. When he paid all their debt, he was glad that his family changed into centipedes. But now, he missed them. He thought, “I miss mother’s voice that woke me up every morning, I miss my dad who greeted me after I got home from work, I miss my sister’s violin playing.” But there was nothing he can do, and they were still disgusting looking.

Gregor worked very hard to forget about his family. He worked hard and saved lots of money. Gregor, himself was the only person to care about. As he worked hard, and as he cared about himself more, he became good looking and also got a promotion in his work. He enjoyed his life and at one point he forgot about his family. When Gregor came home after work and saw them he said to them, “Just go away from me and stop crawling all over the house!” A few days after his family left his house, he recognized they were gone and he felt guilty of yelling at them. Soon he forgot about them. After they were gone, he invited his friends to his house for the first time and had a party and enjoyed his life.

  1. I like the change of his family being insects rather than himself. And how he focused on working for them rather than working with them. Great story.

  2. Wow. That's a shift. It's a certain kind of a 21st century vision, where work is not bad or dehumanizing, unlike Kafka's version . . . .
