The Metamorphosis: Late for Work

Gregor Samsa was awakened by the sun beams entering his window. He squinted his eyes and wondered what the time was. Gregor usually sets his alarm clock to ring at four in the morning so he has an hour to get ready before the train leaves at five. Realizing that the sun had already risen, Gregor began to panic, glanced at his clock, and it was past six thirty. The next train was set to leave at seven. “How is this possible? I always set my clock to ring at four.” He checked the clock and it indeed was set to ring at four. “How did I sleep through the alarm? I haven't ever slept through the alarm! Well, the next train leaves in about 20 minutes. Maybe if I hurry I can catch it.”
Gregor attempted to get out of bed, but he couldn't. He examined his body. He was no longer human, he was some type of bug, a cockroach. He wondered, “Wait. Am I still asleep? Is this really happening? No, I haven’t turned into a bug… Impossible!” He stared at his tiny brown legs dancing madly in front of him. He then felt an itch on his stomach. Looking down his abdomen he could see that there were small white dots covering the itchy area.  He gained control over one of his six legs and touched the dots. He immediately pulled his leg back because it sent a cold shiver through his body. “Oh god, just let me wake up already from this nightmare.”
There was a knock at his bedroom door. It was his mother. “Gregor, weren’t you going to catch the train at five? It’s quarter to seven.” Gregor answered, “Oh yes mother! I am getting up now!” He heard the sound of his voice and was startled. His words sounded garbled by the end of his sentence. His mother seemed to understand him as she could be heard walking off. Now everybody in the household knew he hadn’t gone off to work yet. “This is not a dream, I have to get up.” Then there was another knock at one of the side doors to his room. It was his father. “Gregor are you feeling alright? What’s going on?” At the other side door of his room, his sister Grete gently knocked and asked, “Gregor are you sick? Do you need anything?” He did not answer either of them as he was afraid to, considering the state of his voice. His father went back to the table to finish his breakfast while Grete stayed and begged Gregor to open the door.
Gregor wanted to get up quietly without making a sound. He began to swivel his bottom toward the edge of his bed then stopped. He did not want to go crashing onto the floor and create a loud sound. He laid there for a minute, one third of his body hanging over the edge of his bed, and contemplated whether or not he should call out for help but concluded it was a terrible idea. He again attempted to get out of bed, this time he rocked back and forth on his back. He could not launch himself out of bed and onto the floor. He looked over at his clock again and it was seven. He said to himself, “I will get out of this bed before it strikes a quarter past seven. With my luck, somebody from the firm is sure to show up by then.” Just as Gregor had finished his thought, the doorbell rang.
At the front door was his manager from the firm. The maid opened the door and welcomed him in. Gregor froze in place and was amazed his family allowed the maid to answer the door. Did it not occur to them who would eventually show up? "Good morning Mr. Sasma, is Gregor here? He hasn't shown up to work yet." His father replied to the manager, " Ah, yes. He still has yet to leave him room." His mother joined his father and said, "Gregor must be ill. He isn't himself and his voice sounded strange when I talked to him."
"Well, we'll just see about that now won't we? Where is Gregor's room? I would like to speak with him myself." Gregor could hear their footsteps climbing up the staircase. With every step he heard, the anxiety in his chest increased. He began to rock on his back furiously and finally launched himself head first onto the floor. His fall created a loud thud. "What was that" asked the manager. The footsteps became rapid in pace. Gregor was able to stand on his six legs for the first time and they were obeying his commands. He slowly rotated his body toward the door that lead out into the hall way. No sooner did he face the door the manager from the firm and his family were standing outside, his father knocking and demanding he open the door. Grete could be heard sobbing. Gregor wonder why she was crying. Did she fear that he was about to lose his job or was she upset he wouldn't open the door? His dad banged on the door once again, "Gregor! Open the door. Somebody from the firm is here to see you."
Gregor stood there in the middle of his room looking at the door. He stared at the key in the lock. "Ahem, Gregor. This is your manager. I would appreciate it if you opened the door and spoke to me so that we may sort this mess out. Please, open the door." The tone in the managers voice sounded irritated. A few minutes passed and Gregor did not answer. "Is this a joke," asked the manager, "Gregor this is unacceptable behavior. I took you for  the quiet obedient type but now  it seems you've grown a pair. I think you've forgotten your place in the grand scheme of things. You work for us, the firm, in order to pay off your family's debt and according to our recent records, you haven't been doing so well with sales. Your performance as a traveling sales man is unsatisfactory to say the least and now you are shut up in your room like some strange hermit and refuse to communicate with us. Do you wish to be discharged from your position at the firm?"
Gregor quickly answered the manager but forgot that his speech was a garble of unrecognizable sounds. "No, no sir! I am sorry to have inconvenienced you in anyway, but please do not terminate me from the firm! I wish to continue working my family's debts off so please, if you could wait a moment I will open the door for you and then we can talk face to face. Everything will be settled once I have opened the door, just give me a moment." There was a moment of silence in the hallway. "What did he say? That sounded like an animal," said the manager. "Oh my! Phone the doctor and the locksmith! Gregor is clearly very ill," cried his mother. "Gregor the maid is calling the doctor, don't worry!"
There was a click to the lock on the door and the knob slowly turned. The bedroom door opened. From behind the door Gregor revealed himself and crawled out into the hallway toward the others. His mother and Grete screamed and they all backed away towards the staircase. He stopped and looked at his manager. "Sir, as you can see..." Gregor then took notice of the terror on his managers face as the manager struggled to keep himself prompted up on the railing to the stairs. Gregor made a small advancement again and the manager began to run down the stairs. Gregor thought, " Oh no.. if he gets back to the firm and tells the boss of what I've become... No! He must listen to what I have to say!" He quickly climbed to the ceiling and followed the manager downstairs. Before the manager could reach the door Gregor forced  it shut with his body. He slowly crawled towards the manager, making sure he was blocking him off from escaping. His sister continued to scream, his mother fainted, and his father looked on in disbelief. "Now sir, will you hear me out please?"
The manager tried to slip passed Gregor in a attempted to escape and Gregor grabbed hold of his leg. He was not yet fully aware of the strength he possessed and Gregor crushed the managers leg in his jaws. The manager screamed and fell to the floor. The house filled with the  screams of terror from Grete that ripped into Gregor's ears. The manager struggled to free his leg from Gregor's bear trap-like jaws and was kicking Gregor in the face with his free leg. Gregor released his managers leg from his grip and backed away. Blood dripped from his mouth and bits of the managers pants were stuck to his jaw. "Stay back you monster! Get away from me, get away!" The manager was backed into a corner as Gregor kept trying to talk to him and apologize. Gregor felt a sudden sharp, extreme pain in his back and was so shocked by the pain his legs gave out underneath him.  His father was pelting apples at him from the top of the stairs and one imbedded itself halfway into Gregor's back. When Gregor was regaining his footing, the maid struck him in the back with a broom. "Keep going! Kill that thing" yelled the manager. The maid continued to strike Gregor over and over again with the broom until she broke his exoskeleton. Gregor began to bleed out white sticky goo all over and was letting out hideous sounding squeals of pain every time the maid brought down the broom on his back. "Father go help her" cried Grete as she helped her mother into another room.
Gregor's father grabbed a shovel from the storage closet and ran over to assist the maid. The two of them beat Gregor until he stopped screeching. They were unaware of the white eggs on the underside of Gregor. The eggs hatched and spread across the floor in a chaotic fashion. The babies were hungry and craved protein. Half of the little cockroaches made their way over to the injured manager and began to chew away at his bleeding leg. The other half of the swarm went after the maid and Gregor's father. "Grete get your mother to her room and lock the door now!" The maid and Gregor's father frantically swung at the vermin as they were lead up the staircase. One of the baby cockroaches lunged at the maid and grabbed hold of her hand, severing four fingers. "Ah! My God," screamed the maid. More of the tiny roaches then jumped onto her and she fell down the stairs.

Gregor's father ran into the bedroom where his wife and Grete were. Grete's face was streamed with tears and Gregor's mother was still collapsed on the floor. "Were you able to grab you mother's asthma medicine from the other room?" Grete began to cry hysterically. "N.. No! I, I... I can't find a pulse on mother. I think she's dead father!" Gregor's father grasped his chest and leaned his back against the door. The roaches had reached the bedroom door and were on the other side. The sound of their legs tapping against the wooden door were relentless and the blood curdling screams of the manager and the maid could be heard in the background. Grete covered her ears and tried to block out the disturbing sounds as she rocked back and forth on the floor.

The Dead: The Head of Kate

It was a cold December night and me and my sister are throwing our annual Christmas party with our friends and family.   It was going great, we had Dublin music blasting and everyone was having a good time. People were dancing with each other, my nephew Gabriel, a professional part time book reviewer was there with his "marvelous" wife Gretta.

Well me and my sister Julia have been throwing this party every year since Pat passed away over thirty years ago when we took in his daughter Mary Jane. But I'm worried about my sister. She has been sick lately and slowing down. This might be her last Christmas party god forbid. I really hope shes okay and just has the flu. I do not know what I would do if something happened to her.

But that is not the problem right now. Freddy Molin has showed up and man does this guy know how to throw them back. You can smell the liquor on him from five feet away.

Great now Freddy is making a scene when I am trying to get everyone together to listen to Gabriel's speech. Gabriel is a wonderful writer. I love everything he writes, but now he does not want to read it. I feel bad for him and Julia and me try to talk him down and get him to read the speech and talk to his wife.

Something is going on with those two. They do not seem like they are getting along well and I do not like it. Gabriel is such a good guy, I would hate to see them split Gabriel would be heart broken.

Now everyone is down stairs and Mary Jane is playing some awful music on the piano. I can tell this by the look on Gabriel's face. He does not look thrilled at what she is playing, but ignores it and goes dances with Miss Ivory. How cute is he for doing that, dancing with her making sure she is having a good time.

But Miss Ivory has a big mouth and has upset Gabriel about something. I can tell this by the look on his face. It probably has to go with book review stuff. She always has to bring up something and upset someone. She does this at every gathering. Last time it was with Mary Jane and I am definitely not getting into that story, damn.

While we are waiting for dinner I can see Gabriel rehearsing his speech over an dover again. I wish he would chill and have confidence in what he writes.

Finally the time has come to for the speech. He starts off talking about the present and the past, oh boy where is this going, and cherish there hearts with memories. All I can think about is  where is he going with this.

Oh my god i hope him and his wife are splitting up, it true they are. I can tell by the way he is talking, I hated her since the first time i meet her. She was never happy with anything. I only tolerated her for Gabriel, I just love his so much and want him to be happy.

So we do a toast and like the little baby I am and with everything going on I start crying. But it soon switches into a smile. I look over and Gabriel and his wife are talking and smiling but then leaves the party without her. I do not understand he loves her and she does not want him.

I am gonna take care of this. He should of never left her here alone, alone with me and this big house.

She will be sorry for this, oh will she. She will see how it feels to break a heart when I take hers. I am gonna make her heartless and she will see why you do not mess with my Gabriel.

She will never see Gabriel again, ever. And with in a minute it was over. What did I do, as I stand there looking over her.  I did it.

I stabbed her in the back over and over and when I was down I cut her heart out. I made her heartless like how she treated my Gabriel.

After killed her all the pain she has put Gabriel through was gone. No more wife to tare down Gabriel.  It is all over now, she will never hurt him again. All the pain gone.

Wifeless.

A Fatal Affair: The Dead

I’m a great affair but it’s not so great for me. It’s the Morkan’s annual dance. Everyone who knew them attended, it is one of the most popular parties in Dublin. But me, I’m here taking off coats and putting them up for each guest that walk through the doors. The Morkan sisters are overly anxious about their guest, they keep asking me who came or for Gabriel and Freddy. I wish they would just come downstairs to see who here or who not here. But no, they rather sit upstairs gossiping and bugging me. They know the party is popular, they have been doing it for years and it’s been a hit every year. I am working alone running back and forth from the door to the coat room, yelling upstairs to the Morkan sisters and I am exhausted and the host of the party hasn’t even made it down the stairs.

Finally Gabriel Conroy arrived. I let him know that the Morkan sisters have been anxiously awaiting his arrival. His arrival was also a relief for me, it meant less yelling. Very quickly he made me regret his arrival. Once we got into the coatroom Gabriel, started to be himself. He always asks the wrong questions or just says the wrong things. He wanted to know about my love life again. I know he was trying to impress me and give me money. Of course I didn’t take it, he is married. I escorted him to the dressing room where his aunts and wife were. As I escort Freddy upstairs I over hear Gabriel and Gretta discussing if they should stay at a hotel that evening or take the long trip home. But Freddy cut right into their conversation.

The Morkan sisters finally came out their dressing room with Gretta. And with them being downstairs they were still gossiping. Freddy, Gabriel and Mr. Browne were also chatting. Mr. Browne always flirts with young girl but never gets far. Mary Jane started to play the piano and everyone started to dance. I look to my right and see Gabriel talking to Mrs. Ivors. Mrs. Ivors is a sweet lady and a professor at the same college Gabriel teaches at. I can’t hear what they are saying but I can see her getting upset. They tried to cover it up with a dance but Mrs. Ivors, but whatever he said really upset her.

As I bring out the food for the guest Julia sings a song for the guests. Miss Ivors leaves the party. Gabriel sits at the head of the table and carved the goose. After much fussing, wondering and gossip, everyone eats, and finally Gabriel delivers his speech, in which he praises his aunts Kate, Julia, and Mary Jane (The Morkan Sisters) for their hospitality. After everyone eats I start to clean off the table. Once I’m in the kitchen Gabriel starts with his questioning again. He asks why you do housework for them. And tells me how I deserve better. I brush him off and went to the dining room to finish cleaning off the table. Finally I finished and went to check to make sure the guest were enjoying themselves.

I hear the doorbell. And to my surprise it was Gretta’s first love Micheal Fury. As soon as he walked into the ballroom you could hear pen drop and the uneasiness on Gabriel’s face was astonishing. Gretta and Micheal locked eyes, but he turned and greeted the Morkan sisters but Mary Jane with a kiss on the lips. I could see Gretta’s face drop and rushed to the bathroom and everyone started to gossip. I went to the bathroom to console Gretta and she explained to me how she was still in love with Micheal. I could hear Gabriel yelling for Gretta outside of the bathroom door. I helped her clean herself up and she let Gabriel in. I walked out but stayed close by so no one else would come in. I overheard Gretta confess to Gabriel that she was upset that her first love was here and with his aunt. Right after Gabriel walked out the bathroom looking embarrassed. His aunts quickly came to his rescue. And Gretta quickly packed up her things and left the party.  Michael went running after Gretta. I see Mary Jane running to the dressing room where she once laughed and gossiped in, now heartbroken and crying. I went to find the other Morkan sisters to tell them what had happened. They went rushing leaving Gabriel in the room by himself, as I walked out he asked me to stay. He was red; I could tell he was crying. I ensured him that everything will be ok. He got up, came closer to me and I felt his soft lips press on mines. I instantly got butterflies, but I stepped back and told him that was wrong. He is married and only upset because his wife ran off with Michael. But he grabbed me close and ensured me that the kiss was no mistake, but that he has wanted to do it for a while now. I just walked out the Morkan’s house and never looked back.

The Red with The Cloak

A long time ago, there was a village. It has suffered as a result from wolves for a long time. Some bold young men were trying to kill the wolf during the night. Some had died, and some were hurt. And then they knew they could not beat wolves, so they began to not fight back. Those villagers locked their own doors and windows to defend themselves. Every twenty years or so, the wolf would disappear for a while. Villagers guessed that there might be a crowd of wolves. Every twenty years, a new wolf would appear.

There was a small but nice family. There was a girl who was named Red, which was what her grandmother called her. And she lived with her grandmother. Her parents passed away when she was a little kid because of an accident. She tried to ask her grandmother what happened, but her grandma just said there was an accident. Since there were some wolves that might hurt Red, her grandmother traded a red cloak from a witch for something precious. On her eighteenth birthday, her grandmother gave this cloak to Red as a gift.

“Put your hood on! Red!”
“All right. All right. Don’t always yell to me. I’m not a child any more. Right? Grand?” Red put her red cloak on. Red was fearless, maybe because she’s young. Young people are always fearless. She liked adventures, and she always wanted to try something she never did before, which pissed her grandma off every time.
“It’s good for you,” said her grandmother. “It can protect you from wolves. Wolves are scared of the color red. This place is not safe.”
“I know. I know. I’ll be careful!” then Red opened the door.
“You’re going out?” asked Grand. “Come back before sunset. Remember? ”
“I will!” said Red.

It was snowing. Red felt a little cold. She wrapped her cloak more closely around herself. “I can’t understand how wolves live in such a cold weather.” She said to herself.
“Maybe they’re like you.” She heard a voice from a young man.
“Who are you? ”
“That’s…not nice. Should you at least use ‘please’? ”
“My name is Red. ”
“All right, my name’s Peter. ”
“What did you mean? ”
“Par…Pardon? ”
“You said they’re like me. ”
“I see. Cause you are here with this bitter weather. Right? ”
“Aren’t you? ”
“All right, you just like being defended. Right? ”
Red didn’t answer. She turned back, and began to walk back.
“Hey! Where are you going? ”
“I have to go back before the sunset.”
“Such a good girl! Not like your style. In addition, I just moved here. Nice to meet you.”
“There will be wolves in the night, just take care. Good night.”
“Wait! ……All right, good night.”

Red was back before sunset. She got into the door, and began to take her cloak off.
“What are you doing?” Grand stopped her.
“I’m taking my clothes off. What’s wrong with that? ”
“It’s night, put your hood on.”
“But we’re in the house!” Red was a little bit displeased.
“Wolves can break into our house. Don’t be careless. Winter is their favorite season.”
“But they never did it before.” Red whispered to herself.
“Just go to sleep.” Grand was holding a gun, and sat right behind the door.

When Red went back to her own room, she was going to put her red hood on. Suddenly, she heard some noises from her window, and then she put her cloak on the bed. “Knock, Knock.”
“Who’s there? ”
“Peter, remember? ”
Red opened the window softly, and said to Peter. “What are you doing here? The sun is going down.”
“Just followed you here. I am going home. So…see you next time! ”
“Okay, see you.” Watching Peter leave, Red closed the window softly. She didn’t want her grandmother to know she opened it.

One night passed. There was a person who died last night in the village.
“Who’s he?” Red asked to her grandma.
“It seems like a visitor or someone new here, cause everybody knows it’s extremely dangerous to be outside of the house. So it has been a long time since anyone got hurt.”
“I wonder if you know his name?” Red was a little bit worried.
“Maybe Matt? I don’t remember, you know, I’m old now. So you have to learn how to protect yourself. So wear that red cloak all the time.”
“I will. I will. Just don’t say you’re old again. You’re not old! You can still hold a gun. See! Those really old people cannot even walk! ”
“You’re always sweet.”
“No, I’m telling the truth.”
“All right.”
“I’m going out.”
“Okay, just be careful, even it’s day time now.”
“I know.”

Red was walking on the snow. She had been tracking, or more accurately, following the wolf’s footprints for a while. However, she didn’t get any valuable information from that. It was snowing everyday. It was too hard to find some footprints.

After wandering for a little while, Red met Peter in the woods.
“You are not dead? ”
“You think I should? That hurts! ”
“Sorry, I just thought that’s you.”
“Oh…the guy who died last night? I know how to protect myself, and actually I’m a hunter.”
“For what? ”
“…I don’t understand your question.”
“I mean you become a hunter for what? ”
“Just interests. And what are you doing here? I saw that you have been here for a whole morning. Just rounding.”
“I’m tracking the wolf’s footprint, or specifically, following, cause I don’t know how to track a wolf. ”
“Actually, I do. Let me help you.”
Red led Peter to a withered root of a tree. “Here, I followed its footprints, and then it just disappears here.”
“Let me see.” Peter crouched down and checked the snow around the root. And then he turned back to the opposite direction to check the snow there.
“Wolves are smart, you know? ”
“I don’t understand.”
“It pretended this is its footprint, which is not. See that way, it used its tail to swipe the snow to hide its footprints. Normally, snow will form a smooth shape. But this wolf used snow, which makes the surface not smooth.”
“Then let’s go.”

With Peter’s help, their tracking became easier. They discovered that the footprints became smaller and smaller. And later, the wolf’s footprints disappeared, but there were some human’s footprints.
“Some human kept this wolf? ”
“I don’t think so. For finding this wolf, villagers have already searched everyone’s house.”
They kept following the footprints. And then Peter brought another assumption up. “What if the wolf is actually a man? ”
“What do you mean? ”
“What if it only turns to a wolf during nights, and then turns back to a human during days, is that more possible? ”
“Right! Right! That’s why we cannot find its cave! ”
“So let’s just keep tracking it. We must be able to find who it is.”

Finally, they tracked it down to a house.
“That’s my house!” Red was surprised.
“Okay…the human’s footprints disappear here.”
“That’s my room! ”
“So…do you remember who stopped by your window? ”
“No one stopped by my window before, except…”
“Who? ”
“You.” Red was confused.
“Oh…I remember, but…I don’t know. I never thought I was…”
“Yeah…me, too. ”
“What can I do? ”
“I don’t know. It’s complicated. But before you came here, nobody got hurt, cause we all know how to protect ourselves.”
“It’s my fault.”
“No, don’t say that. You didn’t realize you would become a wolf during the night, so that’s not your fault.”
“What can we do? ”
“Maybe tonight! Tonight, I will tie you to the tree. Then you won’t hurt people.”
“That sounds ok. Thank you very much.”
“No problem. So…before sunset, meet under that tree.”
“Deal.”

Red returned to her house. And she went to her room. She put her pillows and cloaks in her quilt to pretend she was sleeping. Then she wrote a note and put it under the pillow.
“Grand, I know you will be angry. But I have to go out during the night. That wolf is a werewolf. And it’s Peter. I will tie him to the big tree. Love you. Red.”
Leaving this note, Red went out.

Before the sun went down, Grand came home.
“Red? Are you home? ”
Not hearing Red’s answer, Grand broke into Red’s room.
“You already sleep? Okay…I won’t bother you any more.” Grand was going to walk out of Red’s room. Suddenly, she saw there was a red thing under the quilt. She turned back and lifted the quilt immediately.
“Oh god!” She realized Red was not here. She looked terrified. And then she saw the note that Red left for her.
“No! No!” Her pupil turned light gold. She rushed out with her gun and Red's cloak in one second.

Grand arrived at that big tree, eventually.
And there was a wolf with light gold pupil and a shattered body.
That wolf heard the sound that Grand made. It turned back, and walking slowly over here.
Grand was crying silently. She raised her gun.
Then, shot it.
The wolf was down.
And then Grand covered the wolf with that cloak immediately.

After a while, Red woke up under the cloak.
“Why I’m here, Grand?”
“Because you know your destiny now, honey.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You’re that wolf.” Grand sighed.
“Oh my! Peter!”
“He’s dead. And I shot you with an anesthetic rifle.” Grand replied. “Don’t blame yourself. Truth always comes with hurts.” After a moment, Grand continued, “Your parents were wolves as well, but they’re gone. I sent that cloak to you cause it can protect you from turning to a wolf, also can protect villagers here. I’m old, so that I cannot turn to a wolf any more. But you’re so young, and you have to let your power out. I didn’t tell you this because I didn’t want you to be burdened. Powers also bring you responsibilities. You have to go. Wolves are never alone. Just go to find your partners. I can’t keep you all the time.”
“I will miss you.” Red looked sad.
“Me, too, honey.”

In the winter, Red was gone, with the red cloak.
